Why the Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women Matters
Violence Against Women and Girls
Violence against women and girls is one of the most pervasive human rights violations worldwide. An estimated 736 million women – that’s almost one in three – have experienced physical and/or sexual violence and tragically, more than five women or girls are killed every hour by a member of their own family. And it doesn’t just take a toll on those individuals or families. It carries enormous health care, security, and business costs that affect all of us.
Yet, the response to this crisis remains wholly inadequate: 86% of women and girls live in countries where there are no legal protections against gender-based violence. Meanwhile, just 5% of global government aid is allocated to addressing violence against women and girls, and less than 0.2% goes toward prevention. These numbers reflect the enormity of our challenge; violence against women is a global epidemic requiring urgent, sustained action.
What is EVAW Day?
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (EVAW), observed annually on the 25th of November, is a critical moment for raising awareness and demanding action against gender-based violence. It marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the global campaign to end violence, support survivors, and promote prevention.
What We’re Doing
Violence against women is a global problem, and it demands a global solution. Whether through providing support for survivors, amplifying calls for legal reforms, implementing education and awareness campaigns or simply teaching kids about healthy relationships, each of us has a role to play.
At NO MORE, we are committed to tackling gender-based violence at its roots. Year-round, we run impactful campaigns to raise awareness, produce critical educational resources for prevention, and connect survivors with vital support services so they can break the cycle of abuse and reclaim their lives.
How You Can Get Involved
This #EVAW, we’re teaming up with Peace One Day, the Centre for Public Impact, and Avon to host a global broadcast aimed at raising awareness and mobilizing action against gender-based violence. Tune in on the 25th of November, starting at 1:00pm GMT/8:00am EST. Throughout the day, we’ll be airing insightful panels, interviews, and live performances that will highlight efforts being made worldwide to tackle it.
But we don’t just want you to listen – we want you to participate. During the broadcast, we’ll be encouraging viewers to share what #EVAW means to them and how they or their organizations are working to prevent violence and support survivors in their communities. Whether you’re an individual, community leader, or part of an organization, we want to hear from you and we’ll be amplifying your messages on our platforms.
